EXPECTED TASKS
* responses more predictable and easier to live with
* more alert and interested, looking around more
* awake longer periods during the day
* tries to reach objects - strikes and bats
* smiles regularly and starts to laugh
* stares and marvels at his own hands
* better able to support head
* after 6 weeks, crying for no apparent reason starts to decrease
TOYS AND ACTIVITIES
* mobiles continue to be favorites
* unbreakable mirror held 7-8 inches from baby
* continue lots of holding, rocking and carrying as studies have shown that these babies
become more secure toddlers
* take babies for walk or on errands with a secure front carrier (this is a good way to do housework, too)
* talk to baby about what she is doing or seeing
NEEDS
* security of a routine
* familiarity with the same caregivers
* breast milk or formula only
* always hold baby for feedings, avoid propping the bottle
SLEEP
* Baby continues to need a lot of sleep, but should now be more predictable. Try to anticipate nap time and avoid over-tiredness, which can be very upsetting. Day and night should be sorted out, but night feedings usually continue. Avoid bottles in bed.
